“And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. 2 Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
The word blessed also means happy, but happiness according to Jesus. Happiness according to the world is the absence of pain, but happiness according to Jesus is contentment, fulfillment, and divine joy, even in the midst of pain.
The Christian life is not a problem free – pain-free life. It’s a life lived by grace through
faith in Christ, and despite great trials, our joy and peace and happiness is grounded in Christ alone!
This happiness is only for those who are in the Kingdom of God. They are happy, they are blessed because the Kingdom is theirs and that’s enough. Knowing Christ as Savior, being born again, being forgiven, being a child of God, being cleansed from sin, enjoying God forever, and having the gift of eternal life, nothing compares with that!
The world never satisfies our soul, never. It’s been said, “You can’t seek the living
among the dead.” The world is dead. You can’t meet a spiritual need with a physical thing. Only Christ can comfort and transform a dead soul and bring it to life. Jesus said, “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world yet lose his own soul?”
Happiness according to the world is having more money, more power, more sex, more fame, more stuff, more fun, but happiness according to Jesus is not of this world. It’s not
fulfilled by anything material, physical, or temporal.
Happiness according to Jesus is spiritual, divine, heavenly, everlasting, a gift from God, a gift of grace, peace, and contentment. This kind of happiness is not based on anything I have or do. It’s not based on things going my way, or having a good day. It’s based solely on who God is and what He has done for us! God is good, He never changes, and His work is perfect.
The world would say we need to be somebody, or do something great, or have a lot of power or wealth in order to be happy. But that is not the blessed life. Being blessed or happy, according to Jesus knows that God’s Word is true and His Word tells us in Psalm 144:15, “Happy is that people whose God is the Lord.”
Happiness and being blessed only comes by way of repentance over sin and placing our trust in Jesus Christ as our Savior. True life is found only in Christ. He is life. All wisdom, knowledge, love, and power come only from Him.
Christ died and rose from the grave to transform us from being dead spiritually to having real life, not a problem free life, but a life that is forgiven, cleansed, and blessed. In our humanness we could never transform our soul and meet the deep longings of our heart, but the power of God does!
We broke God’s law, we’re guilty, and we deserve hell. God is just. He cannot and will not turn a blind eye to anyone who violates His law and the just punishment is death, but God is also rich in mercy. In His love for us He paid our sin debt by redeeming us with His blood and being our atoning sacrifice. He paid our fine, now He can dismiss our
God saves us by sheer grace and mercy. True salvation is found only through Christ. Any other means to try to gain forgiveness, purpose, or happiness is a false religion and a false god.
Nothing man-made can ever transform a lost, dead soul into a soul that is alive, new, and made righteous. But the gospel, the good news of salvation through Christ, is the power
of God to transform us! That is why we’re blessed.
Our happiness is based only on who Jesus is and what He’s done for us. As the hymn writer said, “Nothing in my hand I bring, but simply to the cross I cling.”
As I humble myself before God, that opens the door to receive His grace, and as I receive His grace I cling all the more to His cross because it’s His life, death, and resurrection that allows me to say, “Thank you Lord for your mercy, thanks for blessing my life!”
