I like Ray Comfort’s logic on this subject. I met him twice in 2008, and once in 2010. He taught me that every building has to have a builder. Every painting has to have a painter. You can’t have a building without a builder and you can’t have a painting without a painter. Even though you have never seen the builder, you know there must be a builder, and even though you have never met the painter you know there is a painter because the painting is absolute proof the painter exists.
In the same way, because there is a creation, there must be a Creator. You can’t have creation without a Creator. Something cannot come from nothing. And even though you can’t see God, you can have absolute knowledge that He exists because we have a creation.
Hebrews 3:4 says, “For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God.” It’s obvious how we got here. Things don’t come into order and existence by themselves. Time and chance have no power to create a complex universe.
But the atheist is “suppressing the truth in unrighteousness. Because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.” (Rom. 1:18-20). They love their sin too much to forsake it.
The atheist knows God exists because we have a creation and their guilty conscience accuses them. Even though they suppress the truth and choose not to believe in God, they often take His name in vain.
God has placed evidence of His existence within every person through common sense and His moral law, the Ten Commandments. Ray Comfort said, “Anyone with a brain that works and eyes that can see knows that there is a God.” Just because I can’t see air doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. The unseen is more real than we think.
God will hold each person accountable for the revelation they have received. Atheists will be judged by God whether they believe in Him or not. It’s easy to prove that there is a Creator, it’s not so easy to confess your sins and admit that you must repent of those sins and trust in Christ alone for salvation.
Lastly, Ray Comfort said, “It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to look at this amazing creation and see the genius of the Creator. Your stumbling block isn’t intellectual…it’s moral.” (You Can Lead An Atheist to Evidence But You Can’t Make Him Think, pg. 8).
